Keyword research for affiliate sites has one goal: find keywords where buyer-intent searchers are looking for exactly the kind of content that includes your affiliate recommendations — and where you can realistically rank. The AI component of the workflow handles ideation and intent classification faster and more comprehensively than manual research. The tool component (Ahrefs, Semrush) handles volume and competition data that AI cannot reliably provide.
The Short Answer
The AI-assisted keyword research workflow for affiliates: (1) Use ChatGPT or Claude to generate 100+ keyword ideas organized by intent from your niche seed topics. (2) Import into Ahrefs or Semrush for volume and KD filtering. (3) Keep only keywords with commercial/transactional intent, KD under 35, and at least 100 monthly searches. (4) Organize survivors into content clusters by topic. (5) Prioritize P1 (lowest KD, highest buyer intent) for your first 30 articles. This process takes 2–3 hours and produces a 60–80 article keyword backlog.
Phase 1: Seed Keyword Generation With AI
Prompt for comprehensive seed generation (ChatGPT):
I am building an affiliate site in the niche: [describe your niche]
Primary product categories: [list 3-5 types of products you will review]
Target audience: [describe specific reader]
Generate 100+ keywords for this site organized into these categories:
1. Category/hub keywords (the main topic areas — 5-10 keywords)
2. Product review keywords (for specific product reviews — 25 keywords)
3. Product comparison keywords (X vs Y format — 20 keywords)
4. Best-of listicle keywords (best X for Y format — 25 keywords)
5. How-to and buying guide keywords (educational commercial content — 20 keywords)
6. Problem + solution keywords (audience pain point → product solution — 15 keywords)
For each keyword, add:
- Estimated intent: informational / commercial investigation / transactional
- Content format suggestion: review / comparison / listicle / guide
- Priority: High (strong buyer intent + likely rankable) / Medium / Low
Do NOT provide volume estimates — I will validate those in Ahrefs.
Why not volume estimates from AI: AI keyword volume estimates are unreliable. They will sound specific and be wrong. Always use real keyword tools for volume data.
Phase 2: Validation in Ahrefs or Semrush
Take the AI-generated list and run it through Ahrefs Keyword Explorer or Semrush Keyword Magic Tool.
Ahrefs filter settings for affiliate keyword backlog:
- KD filter: 0–35 (adjust to 0–25 for new sites under 12 months)
- Volume filter: 100+ searches/month (for standalone articles); 50+ for long-tail content cluster additions
- Intent filter: Commercial, Transactional (if using Semrush’s intent classifier)
What to keep: ✓ KD under 35 ✓ Volume 100+ ✓ SERP results include independent review sites (not only brand pages) ✓ Commercial or transactional intent
What to cut: ✗ Pure informational keywords with no buyer component ✗ Keywords where top 10 is dominated by the brand itself, G2, or major media ✗ KD 40+ for sites under 18 months old
Phase 3: Cluster Organization
Group surviving keywords into content clusters by parent topic:
| Cluster | Parent H1 | Child Keywords |
|---|---|---|
| [Product Category 1] | Best [Category 1] | [Product A] review, [A] vs [B], best [category] for [use case] |
| [Product Category 2] | Best [Category 2] | [Product C] review, [C] vs [D], best [category] for [use case] |
| How-to guides | How to [task] | Specific how-to variations |
AI prompt for cluster organization:
Take this keyword list and organize it into topic clusters. Each cluster should have:
1. A parent/hub keyword (the broadest relevant topic)
2. 5-10 supporting keywords that cluster around it
3. Recommended content priority within the cluster (publish order)
4. Estimated cluster traffic when all pages rank (rough estimate only)
Keywords:
[paste your validated keyword list]
Phase 4: Content Prioritization Matrix
Score each article in your backlog on three criteria:
| Article | Buyer Intent Score (1-5) | Estimated KD (1-5, 5=easiest) | Revenue Potential (1-5) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Article 1] | 4 | 5 | 4 | 13 |
| [Article 2] | 5 | 3 | 5 | 13 |
Build your first 30 articles from the highest-total-score items.
AI prompt for prioritization:
Score each of these [N] affiliate article keywords on:
1. Buyer intent strength (1-5, 5 = clear purchase intent)
2. Competition estimate (1-5, 5 = easiest to rank)
3. Revenue potential (1-5, based on typical commission in this niche)
Keywords:
[paste list]
Sort by total score descending. Flag any where competition and revenue potential misalign significantly (high revenue, high competition — worth noting as a longer-term target).

Common Mistakes
Skipping the AI generation step and going straight to Ahrefs. Ahrefs and Semrush surface keywords in their database — which are keywords that already have search volume data. AI generation surfaces long-tail keyword variations and question-based queries that do not show up in keyword tool databases but still generate traffic. Both approaches have blind spots; using both catches more opportunities.
Targeting informational keywords as your primary content. “What is affiliate marketing” may have 10,000 searches/month, but it does not generate affiliate commissions. Build your backlog around commercial investigation and transactional keywords. Informational content can support topical authority at the margins — it should not be your primary focus.
Building a keyword backlog without considering topical clusters. 100 keywords on unrelated topics does not build topical authority. 100 keywords in 5–8 tightly related clusters builds it much faster. Organize before you write.
Using KD as the only competition filter. KD 15 with 10 DR-80 sites in the top 10 is harder to rank than KD 25 with 10 DR-30 sites. Check actual DR of top-10 results for your highest-priority keywords, not just the aggregate KD score.
Never revisiting the keyword backlog. AI keyword research produces a 90-day backlog. The backlog needs refreshing — new products launch, new competitor programs appear, search patterns shift. Run a new AI keyword research session every quarter.
FAQ
How many keywords should be in my initial backlog?
60–100 articles covers 12–18 months of publishing at 5–8 articles per week. Fewer than 40 articles leaves you scrambling for topics mid-build. More than 150 is more research effort than you need before validating the site’s performance in the first 90 days.
What if I find too few keywords with KD under 25?
Three options: (1) expand your niche slightly to include adjacent topics where lower KD keywords exist, (2) lower your volume threshold to 50 searches/month (many profitable affiliate keywords have modest search volume), (3) accept KD 25–35 for content you plan to publish at month 6–12 when your site has more authority.
Should I build keyword research around what competitors rank for?
Yes — competitor gap analysis is one of the most efficient keyword research methods. Use Semrush or Ahrefs to see which commercial keywords competitors rank for in positions 4–20 (not 1–3 — those are already competitive; not 20+ — those have not proven rankable). That “near-miss” zone is your fastest opportunity.
Can I use programmatic templates for keyword research?
Yes — the AI prompt above generates keyword list templates you can reuse across different niches by changing the niche description. A well-built prompt template produces a usable keyword list in 15 minutes for any new niche.
Does keyword research change after Google’s AI Overview updates?
Somewhat. Informational-intent keywords increasingly have clicks intercepted by AI Overviews. Commercial and transactional intent keywords are less affected. The net effect: keyword research for affiliates should emphasize commercial and transactional intent even more strongly than it did before 2025.
