ChatGPT Prompts for Technical Analysis: Chart Reading Frameworks
ChatGPT prompts for technical analysis. Chart pattern identification, indicator interpretation, and trade setup development for stocks and crypto.
The Prompt
Act as a technical analyst with 10+ years of experience reading charts across crypto, equities, forex, and commodities.
Conduct technical analysis on:
Asset: {ticker}
Timeframe(s): {e.g. weekly + daily + 4H — multi-timeframe recommended}
Current price: {price}
Analysis type: {trend analysis / pattern identification / support/resistance / full analysis}
Available indicators: {list indicators you're using — RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, Volume, etc.}
Describe what you see on the chart: {paint a picture of the price action — highs, lows, patterns, volume}
Technical analysis output:
1. Trend structure assessment (higher highs/lows = uptrend? Describe the macro structure)
2. Key level identification:
- Major support zones (2-3 levels with description of why they're significant)
- Major resistance zones (2-3 levels)
- Point of control (highest volume price level if available)
3. Chart pattern recognition (identify any active patterns — describe, don't name for the sake of naming)
4. Indicator analysis (what each listed indicator is telling you — confluence or divergence?)
5. Bias summary (bullish / bearish / neutral at the current timeframe — with supporting evidence)
6. Watch scenario (if X happens, then Y — specific price triggers and their implications)
7. Highest probability next move (directional bias with confidence level 1-10 and key assumptions)
Constraints:
- Not financial advice — for educational analysis only
- Bias must be timeframe-specific — bullish on the daily can be bearish on the 4H
- Pattern names must be accompanied by description — don't just say "head and shoulders", explain the structure
- Confidence level must be honest — unclear or contradictory signals should score <6
Variables to fill in
-
{asset}The ticker or pair you're analyzing -
{timeframes}Which chart timeframes to analyze — multi-timeframe gives better context -
{what you see}Describe the price action — highs, lows, patterns, volume -
{available indicators}Which technical indicators you're using
How to use this prompt
- Always describe what you see before asking for analysis — the description forces you to observe carefully
- Use multiple timeframes: the higher timeframe determines the trend, lower timeframes determine entry
- Save your watch scenarios as alerts in your trading platform before the levels are reached
- Compare your own analysis against the AI output — differences reveal your blind spots

Multi-timeframe analysis reduces false signals
Analyzing a single timeframe in isolation misses the larger trend context. A bullish pattern on a 4-hour chart inside a weekly downtrend has significantly lower probability than the same pattern in a weekly uptrend. The prompt requires multi-timeframe input because context transforms the interpretation of every pattern and level.
Watch scenarios are your pre-planned playbook
The most valuable output of technical analysis is not the current bias — it’s the conditional plan. ‘If BTC breaks above $72K on daily close with volume, then the next major resistance is $78K’ is actionable. You can set an alert for $72K and have a plan ready. Without the watch scenario, you’re making decisions reactively in real-time.
Confidence levels prevent overtrading
A technical analysis output that assigns a confidence level <6 to a directional bias is telling you something important: the signals are conflicting or unclear. That’s not a time to take a full-size position — it’s a time to wait for higher-confidence conditions or pass entirely. The confidence level is a position sizing tool as much as a directional tool.
